I have to acknowledge the receipt of your
despatch No. 3405/1913 of April 8th. urging the claims of Hong
kong University in the event of the British share of Boxer
Indemnity being utilised for British educational purposes in
China.
I would say in reply that the claims of the
University were given full consideration in the Report which
now before the authorities at Home from whom it is no doubt
receiving attention. In the present stage of the question it
d would be premature to say more, but the specific recommenation
of financial assistance to Hongkong University is one of the
cardinal features of scheme.
It is gratifying to learn from your despatch
that the University is increasing its activities, and that
special provision is to be made on its staff for the needs of
the students from North China and from Peking in particular.
Anything which tends to draw greater numbers of students to
the University is to be heartily welcomed.
